A bit about my therapeutic work

I am qualified in Fine Art (painting) and lectured in the subject for many years before undertaking my training in counselling and psychotherapy. I sometimes use art in my therapy as a way of accessing the unconscious mind, not to make pictures. Art can be a useful and powerful tool. I chose not to train in art therapy but integrative humanistic therapy.

I use a combination of therapies to suit the client but mainly work with:

Psychodynamic; looking at the role of our unconscious mind and how it is affecting us today. We discuss childhood experiences as they form the adult we are today and the significant influences on us as children.

Cognitive Behavioural; working with thoughts and actions to bring about healthy change in order to make life more enjoyable, alter unhelpful patterns of thought and behaviour which is something that we can do now to help ourselves, it is practical and it works.

Humanistic: takes the stance that the client is the expert on themselves and the therapist can bring psychological knowledge and experience of helpful therapeutic interventions to help the client to deal with their problems.

Together we can bring about change that will make the client’s life more enjoyable and bring a deeper understanding and feeling of self-acceptance. I do like to bring some humour to the situation and positive therapy, it’s not all navel gazing an angst.
