What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is indistinguishable from Counselling according to the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

What is often understood as Psychotherapy is a more in-depth and longer form of therapy that takes into account childhood influences and the workings of the unconscious mind. It is more often associated with Psychodynamic Psychotherapy that has its roots in Psychoanalysis.

Psychotherapy is less intensive than psychoanalysis.

In my therapy I tend to be more eclectic using techniques form a variety of therapeutic approaches. I match my therapy to the needs of my client. I work with the processes of the unconscious mind and alleviate suffering by exploring the conflicts held within and thereby making them conscious so that we can work to alleviate the difficulty or feelings of distress.

Difficulties often develop from early childhood experiences and can not only affect the person, but also their relationships with others. We often see the emergence of these conflicts in transference and counter-transference within the therapeutic relationship.

Transference is when the client act towards the therapist as if they were a significant person from their past, often from childhood. The person goes back in psychological time and often feels as though they were a child again.

Counter-transference is the therapist’s emotional response to the client. The therapist will look at how the client is eliciting a particular response and relate it to the client’s unconscious desires, hopes and fears. I would sensitively explore that with my client thereby bringing about change. The client would feel more in control and their inner conflict could be resolved.

Psychotherapy involves free association as a way of accessing the unconscious, this can be done in a number of ways including art, writing, the use of stones, marbles etc. This is often fun and also a very powerful tool for understanding and change.
