What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a trance state of deep relaxation. It is a little like daydreaming. Hypnosis is a different state of consciousness which you can enter so that, for therapeutic purposes (hypnotherapy) can connect with the unconscious self which can be a reservoir of unrecognised potential and knowledge as well as being the unwitting source of many of our problems. The benefits can be long lasting or permanent. No-one can be hypnotised against their will and, when in a trance, a person can still reject any suggestion. It is a state of co-operation between therapist and person.

Hypnotherapy makes use of the conscious and unconscious processes in the brain. The unconscious mind is where we hold all our experience, while the conscious mind is dealing with appraisal and decision making. In hypnosis the critical faculties of the conscious mind are sidestepped and new ideas and suggestions can be put straight into the open unconscious to bring about beneficial changes when the person is awake and in their conscious state.
