Marriage Counselling / Couples Therapy
Treatment: Psychotherapy / CBT
Marriage Counselling or Couples Therapy follows the same process as individual Counselling but the Counsellor is there for the relationship, not to take sides with either person. It has a similar process to individual work in that each person may come to understand themselves and their partner better as well as understand the part they play within the relationship.
The Counsellor will help the couple to see and understand the interaction between them so that positive changes can be made and that the couple will be able to relate to each other more effectively. Counselling will help you to make the most of your relationship.
Some people think that they only have to go for Counselling if they have a big problem or are close to separation or divorce, this is a good time to seek counselling but it can be useful when things are not so desperate, such as wanting to improve communications or having sexual difficulties.
Sometimes couples come to counselling in order to break-up with the minimum of conflict. If a relationship is not viable it will often show in counselling and the Counsellor can help with the distress of the break-up. It can help you to cope with separation constructively.
Relationship counselling is for individuals as well as couples. You do not have to be in a relationship to come for relationship counselling, you may want to explore past issues and prepare for future relationships. You may also want to explore how your family has been affected by a relationship.
Some of the common problems people come for counselling for are:
- How to cope with the aftermath of an affair
- What to do if I am having an affair or I have found that my partner’s having an affair
- We can’t stop arguing
- We don’t seem to talk much and are drifting apart
- Confidence issues
- Dealing with a new baby
- Dealing with second marriage issues
- Coping with ageing issues for men and women
- Sexual difficulties
